Description

Cempasúchil is the ancient Aztec word for these brilliant orange, and sometimes crimson or purple ceremonial flowers, also known as Mexican Marigolds. Their pungent, earthy scent is said to help the dead find their way back to commune with their loved ones during the Dia de los Muertos celebrations. This image was taken in Oaxaca City while walking through one of my favorite barrios, from whose windows and doorways the flowers seem to magically bloom into ornate altars everywhere you look. Giant piles of cempasúchil come into town from country fields on rambling cargo trucks, and in the hatchbacks of economy cars, and even on motorcycles and scooters. Soon the city is filled with their rich, intoxicating scent as the community comes together to honor and celebrate their dearly departed.
