Dia de los Muertos is one of the most vibrant and expressive festivals in Mexico, if not the world. A time when families and friends gather together to remember, celebrate, and even conjure their dead. A time when the ethereal veil between life and death is magnified and illuminated until entire towns and cities are transformed by ceremony and ritual, openly crossing the line between realities known and unknown, adorned with the dark yet colorful symbology of this mesmerizing festival. I first captured this image on such a night in Oaxaca City’s historic barrio, Jalatlaco. Weaving through the swirling tide of revelers I felt transported through my lens, the intersection of senses beginning to meld together into a gothic tapestry… and there she was.
